The Walled Gardens at Chiswick House, Dr Sally Jeffery, 16 February 2021

This is not a B&CLHS event, but one that we think members will enjoy, promoted by the Chiswick House & Gardens Trust.

Dr Sally Jeffery’s interest in Chiswick House arose from research on Sir Stephen Fox’s 1680s garden, on which she published an article in Garden History in 2004 and another for our Journal 15 in 2006.

Sally was historian at the City of London and then helped to set up the Birkbeck (University of London) MA in Garden History. She now lectures on the MA in Garden and Landscape History at the Institute of Historical Research and is a Trustee of The Gardens Trust.

The 6th Duke of Devonshire, who then owned Chiswick House next door, bought the estate in 1812. He had Fox’s house demolished and built the conservatory (which now houses the camellia collection). Fox’s walled gardens survive today as the earliest part of Chiswick House grounds.

This online talk takes place at 7.30pm on Monday, 15 February.

Using the steward’s notes of his expenditure on this major event, James Wisdom will reveal details of the elaborate arrangements made after Sir John Maynard’s death for official mourning at his Gunnersbury mansion and a heraldic funeral. This is an extended version of the illustrated talk given at the West London Local History Conference in November 2020. The speaker is Chairman of the Friends of Gunnersbury Park & Museum and Chairman of B&CLHS

The Brentford Flood 1841, a talk by Val Bott, 18 January 2021

The Brentford Flood of January 1841

B&CLHS Editor, Val Bott, will present an illustrated talk marking the 180th anniversary of this disaster which took place on the night of 16/17 January 1841. She will describe how the Brentford community came together to cope with the damage and destruction, the need to help those made homeless and to organise the removal of wrecks to make possible the re-opening of the waterway. Val’s book Flood! won the LAMAS Local History Publications Award in 2003.
