This online talk takes place at 7.30pm on Monday 18 January.

The Brentford Flood of January 1841

B&CLHS Editor, Val Bott, will present an illustrated talk marking the 180th anniversary of this disaster which took place on the night of 16/17 January 1841. She will describe how the Brentford community came together to cope with the damage and destruction, the need to help those made homeless and to organise the removal of wrecks to make possible the re-opening of the waterway. Val’s book Flood! won the LAMAS Local History Publications Award in 2003.

Thames Luminaries, online lecture series January & February 2021

Members may be interested in this forthcoming series of short talks on historic gardens along the Thames valley, including Hogarth’s House, Chiswick House and Boston Manor House from our patch. Full details and booking information here. The talks are free but a £5 donation is recommended, with proceeds being split equally between the participating houses. The Thames brought commerce and wealth to what is now South and West London, attracting royalty, aristocrats, artists, writers and wealthy property owners. The legacy of these luminaries is an area exceptionally rich in historic buildings, gardens and landscapes. Pope’s Grotto Preservation Trust and English Heritage’s Marble Hill organised the series of virtual talks over three weeks beginning on Wednesday 27 January. Experts will each explore, explain and offer insight into a luminary, their landscape or garden and property.

The talks will be delivered using Zoom. Each talk will start at 7 pm and last for approx-imately 20 minutes with time being allowed for questions and answers at the end. Events will end by 8 pm.

 

St Lawrence’s Church, New Brentford, and its burial grounds, by David Shailes and Jim Storrar, 21 December 2020

This online talk will take place at 7.30pm on Monday 21 December 2020.

B&CLHS members David Shailes and Jim Storrar will present an account of the history of the church and what the burial records reveal about its community in the past. They have been keeping a close eye on St Lawrence’s while refurbishment work is in progress as part of the redevelopment of Brentford.

The church has been empty for decades and this talk will provide an opportunity to hear something about its significance and history
