Three talks at Hogarth’s House

Three talks by people who know their stuff! Each ticket costs £10 per person, and the House is offering the chance to book 3 tickets for the price of 2! If you buy all three and attend all the talks, you get a free glass of wine or soft drink at the third talk to mark the end of the series.

The galleries will be open from 6pm and remain open to visitors until the talks begin. The bar in the Weston Studio will be open before and after the talk with beer, wine and soft drinks.

Tuesday 25 October, 7pm, At Home with the Hogarths by Val Bott
A talk relating to the special exhibition of the same title which runs until January 2023. Val researched the content and acted as project curator for the exhibition. She will introduce the audience to the Hogarths’ fascinating relatives, friends and neighbours with more detail and colour than could be included in the exhibition.
Val is a local historian and chairs the William Hogarth Trust

Monday 7 November, 7pm, Hogarth’s drawings: sketches, studies and plans, by Sheila O’Connell
While some artists fill sketchbooks with records of whatever they see and plan their paintings before putting brush to canvas, Hogarth didn’t make many drawings. The 100 or so that survive reflect his energy and individualism. Focussing on Industry and Idleness Sheila will use the drawings to show Hogarth ‘thinking on paper’.
Sheila was a curator at the British Museum for 30 years and cared for the major collection of Hogarth’s prints and drawings.

Monday 21 November, 7pm, Hogarth & his Animals, by Elizabeth Einberg
While not a specialist animal painter Hogarth could paint any animal with natural force. His relationship to the animals he put in his pictures was different from anyone else’s; none is a mere portrait, but provides a comment on Hogarth’s subject matter and on the circumstances of his sitters.
Elizabeth was s Assistant Keeper of the Historic British Collection of the Tate Gallery (now Tate Britain) for 28 years. After retiring in 1998, she compiled the first comprehensive catalogue of Hogarth’s paintings since 1949, published by Yale University and the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, in 2016.
