an illustrated talk by Val Bott, Chairman of the William Hogarth Trust. As part of her work on the refurbishment of Hogarth’s House, she has researched the garden from its origin in the 1680s. She is now advising on its refurbishment and has helped to develop a scheme which is the subject of a current application for Lottery funding.

The Syon Abbey Herbal

an illustrated talk by John Adams of Syon Abbey Research Associates close to the 600th anniversary of the founding of Syon Abbey in February 1415 by Henry V. Unusually, its 60 sisters and 25 brothers were under the rule of an Abbess. The Herbal was written by Thomas Betson, the Abbey’s last-known librarian, with 700 plant entries and 400 remedies, some of them lethal!

Copies of John’s new book on the Herbal will be on sale at the special price of £30.

Christmas Meeting 2014

All members are welcome at our usual sociable get-together. Small contributions of seasonal food to share will be very welcome as always, while drinks will be on sale in the bar. Our book stall offers a chance for last-minute present buying (including new Hogarth’s House merchandise) and there will be a special local history quiz.
