This online talk by John Collins was planned for November 2022 as part of the London Luminaries talks programme but had to be postponed at short notice. It will now take place on 22 February 2023.

John Collins is L B Hounslow’s Senior Manager for Historic Houses and has been overseeing the stunning restoration of Boston Manor House. This talk follows the Food & Drink theme of the 2022 prog-ramme, looking at what was eaten and drunk there over the centuries as well as what was produced on the estate for the residents.

Lord Burlington, Duchess Georgiana and the Chiswick gardens, 20 February 2023

Monday, 20 February at 7.30pm

This illustrated talk will be given by Dr David Jacques OBE, historian of gardens and designed landscapes and author of Chiswick House gardens: 300 years of creation and re-creation, published in 2022. He is THE expert on Chiswick House Grounds; his expertise comes from his detailed research and also from his very long association with the Chiswick House estate as an adviser and a trustee. It will be an excellent evening at which all are welcome.

Our audience will be admitted from about 7.15pm and the talk will start at 7.30pm; the meeting will end at about 9.00pm

‘Sacred to the Muses’: Pope, Burlington & the Arcadian Thames, 9 February 2023

Professor Judith Hawley FSA of Royal Holloway College will give a talk on Alexander Pope, Lord Burlington and the Arcadian Thames. The long friendship between Pope and Burlington grew when the poet and his parents were living for a time in the house which became the Mawson Arms and Burlington was beginning his work on the gardens at Chiswick House.

Doors open 6.30pm, when refreshments will be available, and the talk starts at 7pm
Admission is free for members of the Friends, and non-members are asked to make a donation of £12.00 (£10.00 concessions)
