Brentford & Chiswick Local History Journal 34
A4, 28 pages Price £10.00
This edition of the Journal covers a wide aspects of the history of our area. Two papers set the scene for Brentford in the 16th and 17th centuries: Steph Hagan provides very personal and sometimes touching stories about women connected to Boston Manor while Sarah Barber shares her detective work which has uncovered the global impact of the Hawley family of Brentford. Though based in Australia, John Dent‘s research into his English ancestors has revealed personal and business connections with Thomas Neill of Arlington House, Turnham Green. James Wisdom found a large glass negative of Turnham Green in the Local Studies Collection at Chiswick Library as a postgraduate student in the 1970s on which the photographer had helpfully scratched the date (1863) into the emulsion. This has enabled James to work with Val Bott to pin down the details of the view and the possible photographer. David Shailes has explored the story of Brentford’s massive gasworks, a significant element of the town’s economy for most of the 19th and 20th centuries. And we commissioned Wesley Henderson-Roe to combine his knowledge of the world of the theatre with his historical skills to mark an anniversary of the Tabard Theatre with a short history of the pub and its theatrical connections.
