Brentford & Chiswick Local History Journal 32
A4, 28 pages Price £10.00
This edition of our Journal marks the centenary of the publication of historian and campaigner Warwick Draper’s important history of Chiswick in 1923. Prof Ruth Levitas has contributed a fascinating piece about Draper and his family, Val Bott describes the book itself and the subscribers who made it possible, while the jaunty frontispiece drawn by Draper’s 18-year-old son graces the back cover.
Many other people who lived and worked in Brentford or Chiswick appear in this edition, some with international connections. Phil Philo has followed up his talk to the Society in March 2022 with an account of two men who sailed with Captain Cook. Ursula Dommett has contributed a piece on her ancestors, the Edwardian naturalist William Kirby and his family, who had links to Germany, Finland and the USA. Jim Storrar writes about the occupants of a Brentford children’s home and identifies its location, while Norma Cox describes the very different world of The Chiswick Sports Club where West London teams played tennis, football, cricket and rugby, and international championships in tennis and lacrosse were held. Some of our early Journals included a summary of the work of Hounslow’s Local Studies & Archives team and we have revived this concept by inviting Sophie Bailey to describe the range of inquiries she dealt with during 2022.
